DVD Review: Desperate Housewives – The Complete Eighth and Final Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Desperate Housewives – The Complete Eighth and Final Season on Blogcritics.

Having warped my own fragile little mind as a youngster by viewing Monty Python’s Flying Circus, I tend to occasionally slip into a similarly-surreal world of strange skits. When I see a terrible television show run entirely too long on any network (even UPN!), I can’t help but envision a take on the timeless “Upper Class Twit of the Year” sketch, wherein something resembling the Olympics ignores all things athletic-like and focuses instead on television shows competing against each other in order to jump over a shark. Were such an event to be constructed and televised, Marc Cherry’s Desperate Housewives would surely be a hot item to lay even money on. (more…)

Revenge: The Complete First Season DVD Review: Very Little Here You Can’t Find in a Daytime Soap Opera

Since the dawn of television itself, there have been countless attempts to turn popular big screen movies into a long-running weekly programs produced exclusively for small screen viewers. More times than not, these transitions have proved disastrous for producers and performers alike, but that hasn’t prevented them from continuing to try. Lately, however, TV studios have been attempting to turn entire film genres into series. A recent example was the shockingly god-awful unintentional laughfest The River — a show that should serve as living proof that ABC will, in fact, air anything.

DVD Review: Castle – The Complete Third Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Castle – The Complete Third Season on Blogcritics.

One of the biggest problems with diving into a television series several seasons after it has started — without having witnessed any of that particular show’s previous episodes — is that you really don’t have a basis of comparison on its quality. I had seen promos for Castle before via the dozens of bumpers found at the beginning of just about any DVD release these days, and found them to be quite amusing, but I never actually saw it before taking a look at this season box set.

DVD Review: Body of Proof – The Complete First Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Body of Proof – The Complete First Season on Blogcritics.

Ouch. As to how this one got on the air in the first place is beyond me. How it somehow managed to get renewed for a second season is a clear indication that the executives at ABC are either high or have an intelligence quota comparable to that of a young Basset Hound. But, I’m getting ahead of myself: we’re only examining Body of Proof: The Complete First Season here — a show that, in lieu of innovation or imagination, took the very best elements it could muster from every medical drama and murder mystery series past or present, threw them into a pot and let the whole seemingly-pleasant concoction simmer until everything boiled out except for the all-too-familiar smell of cliché.

DVD Review: Growing Pains – The Complete Second Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Growing Pains – The Complete Second Season on Blogcritics.

Although I was never a “fan” of the show, I did catch Growing Pains every now and then during my tenure in elementary school (via one of the three stations we received at our isolated country house courtesy of our leaning, state-of-the-art aluminum VHF antenna) and I vividly recall seeing several episodes to this day. You can imagine my surprise when I booted up Growing Pains: The Complete Second Season and saw all of the episodes I so clearly remember viewing when they were first broadcast.

DVD Review: V (2009): The Complete First Season

Article first published as DVD Review: V (2009) – The Complete First Season on Blogcritics.

Like many members of Generation X, I was parked directly in front of the TV set when the original NBC mini-series V premiered in 1983. The series told of a superior alien race that came to Earth, allegedly in search of water — while the truth behind the Visitors’ outing was much more dastardly: they were actually hideous, bipedal reptilian critters in disguise that had come to eat us. Needless to say, such a fantastic story became the talk of the playground for me and my friends at school — as it did with most of my generation. The series proved to be a hit for NBC, and was followed by a second mini-series and a short-lived television show.

DVD Review: Scrubs: The Complete And Final Ninth Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Scrubs: The Complete And Final Ninth Season on Blogcritics.

Some television shows are self-aware of their value to the entertainment world, and wisely recognize when it is time to call it a day. The Eighth season of Scrubs ended on a positive note; one that didn’t call for any continuation. But, much like a vehicle owner that firmly believes he can squeeze one last trip down the road out of his once-faithful jalopy, series creator Bill Lawrence decided that he’d give Scrubs a final go. The result was a pseudo spin-off: something that bears the onscreen title of Scrubs: Med School, but is referred to on DVD as Scrubs: The Complete And Final Ninth Season.
