DVD Review: Eureka, Season 5 – The Final Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Eureka, Season 5 – The Final Season on Blogcritics.

Many individuals out there believe the Road to Hell is paved with the good intentions of others. It that were true, one might have every right to argue about the belief that the equally-talked about Stairway to Heaven could very well be lined with bad television network decisions. All those really good and/or promising series that received a unwarranted, swift chop of the ever-dreaded “Exec Axe” are there, embedded within the steps leading up to eternal glory to entice you with the promise that they just might be alive and well up there. Ironically enough, sources indicate that Highway to Heaven is not among those titles, but I’ve been assured by the Amazing Criswell that Eureka is. (more…)

DVD Review: Warehouse 13 – Season Three

Article first published as DVD Review: Warehouse 13 – Season Three on Blogcritics.

Many a science fiction television series has the tendency to take itself as seriously as a heart-attack, only occasionally dabbing into the subgenre of “the funny.” As such, they tend to become what one might desire to call “soap operatic” — reaching at every ring the merry-go-round dispenses in their direction, all the while becoming more staid in nature than before. And then there are those shows that, from the get-go, take a light-hearted approach to things. One such series is SyFy’s Warehouse 13 — a not-too-terribly solemn series that was surely inspired by that epic closing shot from Raiders of the Lost Ark. (more…)

PlayStation 3 Review: Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory on Blogcritics.

Last year, I was unceremoniously greeted with the unhappy news that an old acquaintance of mine by the name of Chris had passed away in his apartment — where he slowly decomposed for about a week before someone noticed they hadn’t seen him. Due to his highly autistic behavior and noticeable lack of social skills (to say nothing of his personal hygiene), he wasn’t considered to be a very popular fellow amongst his peers. He and I, however, were able to communicate when I was younger because of our shared interests such as the British sci-fi comedy program, Red Dwarf, and the occasional anime title. (more…)

DVD Review: Alphas – Season One

Article first published as DVD Review: Alphas – Season One on Blogcritics.

Much like there are confused teenage girls and bored, desperate housewives who periodically get into a heated argument over whether or not Robert Pattinson is a better actor over Taylor Lautner, there are those of us in this world who hold high opinions of certain (real) performers — and feel that they can liven up even the most dreadful of affairs with their presence alone. Who can forget how a latter-day Orson Welles was able to make Paul Masson wine almost sound tolerable? And then there are contemporary artists, such as one of my personal favorites, the great David Strathairn. Much like most straight men willingly admit they would have sex with George Clooney, I would gladly do the same with David. But I digress. (more…)

Blu-ray Review: The Princess Bride – 25th Anniversary Edition

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: The Princess Bride – 25th Anniversary Edition on Blogcritics.

Every now and then, the motion picture industry kicks some absolutely serious ass throughout an entire year with a venerable array of odds and ends that go down in cinematic history. One such year was 1987 — which delivered unto us movies to satisfy every genre lover: action (The Living Daylights), sci-fi (Predator), horror (Hellrasier), and even romance (Moonstruck). 1987 also gave us an unprecedented glimpse at to what can happen when someone successfully adapts a fantasy/adventure/comedy/romance novel many previously thought impossible to film. Never an easy task, indeed — especially back when movies didn’t have overrated CGI effects to rely upon. (more…)

The Adventures of the Wilderness Family DVD Review: The Defining Moment of an All But Dead Subgenre

Following the events of a seemingly-endless war in Vietnam and the horrid realization that mankind was emitting excessive waste into the air within the heavily-populated areas of the world, it was inevitable that someone somewhere in the already hygienically-questionable ’70s would pack up their daily struggle with life in the city and move out into the country to get away from it all. Today, we call them dirty stinkin’ hippies. Back then, however, they were something of heroic figures to those who secretly envied the ability to stop working for a living and adjourn to the mountains. Well, they were in the movies, at least. Read the rest of this entry »

DVD Reviews: Alphas – Season One / Warehouse 13 – Season Three / Eureka – Season 5

Article first published as DVD Reviews: Alphas – Season One / Warehouse 13 – Season Three / Eureka – Season 5 on Blogcritics.

Recently, the folks at Universal Studios Home Entertainment unveiled three very different-but-wholly-similar SyFy shows to DVD: a venerable assortment of television series that should appeal to almost everything a science fiction lover could want. From the newly-established Alphas, to the well-known humor and heart of Warehouse 13, and to the final hoorah of the show-stopping Eureka, this trio of TV goodies are worth their respective weights in gold. Blu-ray Review: Big Miracle

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Big Miracle on Blogcritics.

Ah, the ’80s: a time when we only had but a few television stations in the US (unless you were rich enough to have one of those fancy, huge satellite dish thingies), and the nightly news was viewed in almost every home across the nation. Of course, we had to watch it. After all, what if the Russians launched nuclear missiles at us, thus turning our Cold War into World War III? Fortunately, news broadcasters occasionally took a weight off our minds, such as when they brought us day-to-day accounts of three whales trapped within the ice of Alaska. If you were there, you might remember the incident. If you weren’t, good news: somebody made a movie about it. (more…)

Blu-ray Review: Journey 2 – The Mysterious Island

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Journey 2 – The Mysterious Island on Blogcritics.

Jules Verne’s timeless literary classics have been the target for many an impractical film adaptation over the years, so I think it goes without saying that it’s high time we had a faithful motion picture rendering of one of his works. Sadly, the Walden Media-produced family adventure pic Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is not the film we’ve been waiting for. In fact, it’s nowhere near authentic. Or credible. Actually, truth be told: this is one of the worst damn family-friendly adventure movies I’ve seen in at least a week — an abomination of Hollywood hopelessness that should have Jules Verne come back to life to sue all of those involved with the making of it. PlayStation 3 Review: Tales of Graces f

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Tales of Graces f on Blogcritics.

OK, so before you start groaning: yes, this is another Japanese role-playing game (or “J-RPG,” as they are known to fans). And, as such, you can expect a gratuitous amount of big-eyed androgynous caricatures, goofy-looking critters to combat, and — most importantly of all — fun. For those of you who are utterly confused by the weird-ass title here, Tales of Graces f is one of those literal translation jobs, and the “f” in this case stands for “future.” The game, one of many in the long-running Tales series that started in 1995, transports us to planet called Ephinea — where a seemingly-genderless knight by the handle of Asbel encounters an amnesiac lass.
