Music Review: Tiësto – Kaleidoscope [Album]

Review posted at Altsounds.com

The flying Dutchman himself, DJ Tiësto, returns with his fourth album to entice and entrance electro music lovers everywhere. For “Kaleidoscope”, Tiësto brought together a variety of recording artists from all around the world, such as Nelly Furtado, Tegan & Sara, Calvin Harris, Kianna, Sneaky Sound System, and more — and the former “World’s No. 1 DJ” titleholder (DJ Magazine, 2002-2004) has changed his repertoire a great deal for this album. The result? A damn good collection of trance tunes… (Read the rest at Altsounds.com)

Music Review: The Definitive Horror Music Collection

Originally posted at blogcritics.org

OK, so how many of you can recall the not-too-distant days when horror movies had entirely original scores? No, I don’t mean the modern soundtrack kind (that which amounts to little more than a mixtape of various recording artists whom record labels are keen to promote). I mean the Guy-Sits-Down-And-Writes-Music-Specifically-For-The-Movie kind that are usually performed by whole orchestras by conductors. Sometimes even with choirs. Other times, said scores are written and performed by progressive rock groups from Italy, or composed by the filmmaker himself with a synthesizer.

Music Reviews: Cherry Poppin’ Daddies – Skaboy JFK vs. Susquehanna

Originally posted at blogcritics.org

It’s hard to believe that the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies have been together for 20 years. Most of us only ever heard of them during the late ‘90s, when a swing dance craze appeared on the big city scene (a craze that dissipated all too soon). And, while swing music (and dancing) is probably far from dead, one must admit that the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies have been a bit dormant these last couple of years.

Music Review: Electric Six – Kill

Originally posted at blogcritics.org

Something tells me the word “subtle” is not in Electric Six’s collective vocabulary. All one has to do is take a peek at the new music video for “Body Shot,” the first of 13 songs from their forthcoming album, Kill. The video (viewable here — big time NSFW Warning, folks!), which features explicit nudity and fetishistic sexual innuendo galore, is guaranteed to raise an eyebrow or two amongst the conservatives (and even the not-so-conservatives). But, despite the “objectionable” material featured in the video, one can’t help getting into the groove of “Body Shot.”

Music Review: Anna Rose – Self-Titled (EP)

Review posted at Altsounds.com

Living in a small and shockingly closed-minded rural “redneck” community, you become accustomed to certain things. For example, you can’t find any real (not to mention fresh) sushi. As a film buff, I am constantly annoyed over the fact that I am unable to discuss motion pictures with anyone with an IQ over 75. But if there’s one thing I can not and will not give in to, it is the evil of country music…. (Read the rest at Altsounds.com)

Music Review: Cobra Starship – Hot Mess

Originally posted at blogcritics.org

My first introduction to Cobra Starship was via the end theme song from the motion picture, Snakes On A Plane. I thought for sure they were a temporary group — one that was created by the cast or crewmembers (or friends of the cast or crewmembers) from the movie and written specifically for the film itself. While the song wasn’t Grammy-winning material on any level, it more than met the standards raised (or lowered, if you will) onscreen in Snakes On A Plane. Therefore, the song was A-OK in my book (as was the movie).

This item and more under the hammer now at eBay!

Hey all, just wanted to let you know I have three really nifty and groovy items up on “The Bay of E” this week.

First off, there’s an original Nintendo 8-bit Entertainment System Action Set (http://bit.ly/1aYvKT), which is in wonderful condition and still in its box (also in pretty damn good shape).

Next up is a vintage Atari Super Pong System (http://bit.ly/2tUo5x) which may have been the second home video console ever — it also comes in its original box (the box is a bit beat up) but I was unable to located the AC power adapter so I can’t tell you how well it worked.

Finally, for you music lovers, there’s a Lot of 113 CDs (http://bit.ly/3TLwzr).  Depeche Mode, Stone Temple Pilots, Madonna, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin, Mr. Mister, No Doubt, Andi Sex-Gang, Phil Collins, Genesis, George Thorogood, are just a few of the artists in this collection of stuff that has been building up in my room for the past couple of years.

So please, people — help me help you: take these off my hands and into yours.

Music Review: The Lovemakers – Let’s Be Friends

Originally posted at blogcritics.org

As someone who has worked and played in a few bars knows, there are a lot of independent music groups out there. From lounge combos to three piece bands to sad and lonely guys sitting up on a stage playing a guitar, lamenting about his dead dog – they’re all out there. Most of these indies suck, plain and simple – and it is extremely rare to come across one that actually succeeds in knocking your socks off. What’s even more uncommon is for one of these atypical groups to actually get ahead in the music world: most of the time, it’s the guys that suck that land a label.
