Blu-ray Review: The Heart Specialist (2011)

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: The Heart Specialist (2011) on Blogcritics.

I really don’t know why, but every time I pick up a movie that has a 2011 home video release and then notice the film’s actual copyright date is from five years prior, I am reminded of that mid-to-late-’90s craze when American audiences finally started to recognize Jackie Chan as an actual living Asian entity. It was during that time that a distributor with ties to a certain famous cartoon mouse began to release any and all Chan flicks they could get their hands on; re-dubbing, re-scoring, and re-editing the works until they resembled something that only their studio execs could be proud of.

Blu-ray Review: The League – The Complete Season Two

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: The League – The Complete Season Two on Blogcritics.

As one of those fellers who has always been particularly non-athletic (read: nerdy), I’ve always been completely unable to understand the downright fanaticism that the more sporty types in society (read: jocks) tend to exert on a perpetual basis toward their favorite teams and players. To me, the concept of a fantasy football league is just as absurd as is the realization of an actual football league. It has always been my opinion that fantasy football folk are little more than fools who probably have great difficulty with grasping reality.

Blu-ray Review: Wrong Turn 4 – Bloody Beginnings

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Wrong Turn 4 – Bloody Beginnings on Blogcritics.

It’s rare that you get that feeling of utter and total incompetence within the first thirty seconds of watching a motion picture — even if it’s one of the many crappy, direct-to-video torture porn flicks that infiltrate video store shelves every year. And yet, as soon as two ham-fisted Canadian actors walk onscreen and introduce the inbred cannibalistic antagonists of Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, only to be upstaged by the lousy makeup and appalling acting of their silent co-stars. And it only gets worse from there, as the film’s murderous marauders make merry after they escape their confines and slaughter every sane person about in the film’s blood-spattered pre-credit sequence.

Article first published as Fox Launches its “World Cinema” Series with a Trio of Titles on Blogcritics.

Sometimes, movie studios in Hollywood remember that the rest of the world exists — and that they even make those moving pictures things that keep them rolling in the dough year-round. Strange as it seems, them studio boys even occasionally realize that they are fully capable of releasing them there foreign flicks to their American audiences as a way of making even more money. Recently, Fox Home Entertainment launched their first assembling of International films for what they have dubbed their “Fox World Cinema” line. These titles include the Bollywood wonder Dum Maaro Dum, the Chinese martial arts epic The Butcher, the Chef, and the Swordsman, and a little crime drama ditty from Italy, Angel of Evil.

Blu-ray Review: Bones: The Complete Sixth Season – “Cradle to Grave Edition”

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Bones – The Complete Sixth Season (“Cradle to Grave Edition”) on Blogcritics.

Forensics series are a dime a dozen these days. If one were to turn on any television station at any given time, they would be given the option of devoting their time to no less than 128 different shows about people investigating the deaths and disappearances of others — 125 of which aren’t at all good. And so, we have to embrace the few of ‘em that are out there that are actually good. But, as is always the case with a TV show that holds one’s prolonged interest on account of being superior in quality, the writers and producers of said first-rate program are constantly in jeopardy of committing that one, heinous, soulless sin: that of “jumping the shark.”

DVD Review: Lie To Me – The Complete Third and Final Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Lie To Me – The Complete Third and Final Season on Blogcritics.

The entire history of Lie To Me is a somewhat sordid affair. The Fox filler first premiered in the middle of the 2008-2009 television season, much to the delight of viewers and critics alike. The show’s second season didn’t enjoy as much success, though, to wit there were uncertainties as to whether or not the series would be renewed for a third season. After the cancellation of Lone Star in 2010, Fox figured “Aw, what the hell” and allowed Lie To Me to run about for another half season, which ended in the early part of 2011.

Blu-ray Review: Sons of Anarchy – Season Three

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Sons of Anarchy – Season Three on Blogcritics.

It’s rare for a cable television series to actually pick up more viewers over the course of its run. When Sons of Anarchy — FX’s gripping drama about an outlaw motorcycle club — first started broadcasting only a few short years ago, its ratings were significantly less than the numbers they have been turning up in the seasons since then. When Season Three rolled around, however, the ratings were at their highest yet. And it only requires the viewing of one or two episodes to learn why the ratings kept going up on this one: this is a damn good show!

Henry’s Crime Blu-ray Review: Keanu Reeves Branches Out

What is Henry’s Crime? Apart from a poor title, it’s a movie about some poor dope by the name of Henry who perpetrates a misdeed. In this instance, the aforementioned Henry feller is played by none other than Keanu Reeves. Now, should that mere fact not be enough to have you running for the hills, please be advised that Mr. Reeves also decided to branch out from his usual bland method of acting to co-produce this low-key dramedy. Still reading? Still curious as to what Henry’s Crime is? Well, it’s a yarn about Henry Torne, whose entire life is “Torne” when he unknowingly agrees to be the getaway driver for a group of friends who are out to rob a bank. When his pals flee, Henry winds up in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. [Read the rest at Cinema Sentries.]

Marley & Me: The Puppy Years Blu-ray Review: Oh, Dear God, No!

Just when you think that that god-awful mega-super-evil conglomerate known as Walmart couldn’t get any more malicious towards its ignorantly innocent clientele, it subtly unleashes an “in-store only” exclusive: a forgettable, crappy sequel to a surprisingly entertaining Owen Wilson movie. Yes, it’s Marley & Me: The Puppy Years — wherein the producers behind this abomination figured it would be a good idea to discard just about any continuity with the original film by turning this into a just another talking dog film. Blu-ray Review: Rio (2011)

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Rio (2011) on Blogcritics.

Animation really isn’t my thing; I’m just going to say that right off. But, every now and again, I inadvertently come across a family-friendly animated flick that doesn’t leave me with an overwhelming sensation to set things on fire. In fact, in the case of Rio, a computer-animated feature from the folks that brought us the Ice Age franchise, I actually found myself in a state of enjoyment throughout the duration of the 96-minute movie.
