Blu-ray Review: Honey 2 (2011)

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Honey 2 (2011) on Blogcritics.

“From the director of Honey comes Honey 2.” That’s what it actually says on the reverse side of the cover art for this one. Honestly, I have to question the sanity of whomever wrote that, and why they would want to promote that to begin with. But then, when you stop to look at the directorial legacy of Honey 2’s helmsman, Bille Woodruff, you’ll note that the only other items on his résumé are movies like Bring It On: Fight to the Finish and Beauty Shop, and a number of R&B music videos. Luckily for him, Bille’s experience directing complete and total tripe has prepared him for what could be his magnum opus here, as Honey 2 is without a doubt the new Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo — only without the cheesy charm. Catching Up at the Video Store: From Hairstylists to Hippies, Musicians to 9/11

Article first published as From Hairstylists to Hippies, Musicians to 9/11 on Blogcritics.

For this edition of “Catching Up at the Video Store,” I have dived deep into the more “serious” pool of filmmaking. You know, biographies, documentaries: the kind of stuff we normally turn away from for fear of being enlightened and/or educated (as my liberal colleagues in everyday life would say), or, as my conservative friends would be likely to call it, brainwashed by some hippie agenda. But, no matter which side of the political fence you happen to live on — be it the “bring on the tears like Sally Struthers in a ‘Feed the Children’ commercial” left or the “let’s just nuke the sons of bitches and have done with” right, there’s no denying that a few of these items might just touch your soft spots. No, not down there — a little higher up, you perv. Of course, our first entry in “From Hairstylists to Hippies, Musicians to 9/11” isn’t likely to touch you in either place.

Blu-ray Review: Take Me Home Tonight

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Take Me Home Tonight on Blogcritics.

Topher Grace, a lad whose entire career has basically consisted of little more than That ‘70s Show and upsetting Spider-Man fans up until this moment in time (look, that whole movie was doomed from the get-go: blame the studio, dammit), is out to prove a point. His argument goes something like this: “Look, I’m really capable of doing more. Really.” And I don’t disbelieve him on this one, either, kids: I happen to think Topher is a really talented feller — one that just doesn’t seem to get the credit he deserves. Seriously, I’m being legit here. Honest.

Blu-ray Review: You Got Served – Beat The World

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: You Got Served – Beat The World on Blogcritics.

In the everyday average world, there are three little words that people rarely enjoy hearing: “You’ve been served.” It’s one of those sayings that is usually uttered by either a process server or a law enforcement officer, and generally associated with paternity tests, lawsuits, child support and, if you’re really lucky, divorce. In the world of cinema, however, there is an equally-dreaded phrase — one that is not bound to being dealt out by only two kinds of professionals: “You Got Served.”

Claudio SIMONETTI HORROR PROJECT (1991) DVD-R

Produced as a promotional companion piece to the album of the same name, Simonetti Horror Project is a mind-blowing example of early ’90s Eurotrash. Former Goblin keyboardest Claudio Simonetti performs several tracks from cult classic Italian horror and giallo movies from Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava, including Tenebre, Suspiria, Deep Red, Phenomena and Demons (the latter of which features clips from the original “Demon” music video by Michele Soavi). As an extra-added bonus, Simonetti and Euro rapper Dr. Felix perform a hip-hop version of “Profondo Rosso” that has must be seen to be believed! Unavailable for several decades now, you can frighten off your friends and family for good with Simonetti Horror Project via this DVD-R available from me at iOffer.com.

“Friday” by Rebecca Black: The Most Epically-Awful Tune of the Year?

Article first published as “Friday” by Rebecca Black: The Most Epically-Awful Tune of the Year? on Blogcritics.

There’s a reason I hate computer software that allows even the most untalented of people to create what they perceive to be music. Case in point: a 13-year-old junior high artist(e) by the name of Rebecca Black. With the help of the child exploitation gurus at Ark Music Factory, Black’s cheaply-produced music video for her nearly tone-deaf (thank goodness for Auto-Tune, eh?) monstrosity of a single, “Friday,” has gone viral since it appeared on YouTube in February.

Blu-Ray Review: Preacher’s Kid

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Preacher’s Kid on Blogcritics.

Sometimes you suffer through an urban drama that is so surprisingly inane, derivative, and boring, that you’re left wondering if today’s alleged filmmakers have ever watched a movie before in their lives. Stan Foster’s Preacher’s Kid is a film that inspires such confidence from its viewers. Based on the parable of the Prodigal Son (which can be found in some book called The Bible), Preacher’s Kid gives us a modern-day twist on the religious tale. Former Destiny’s Child performer LeToya Luckett leads the way here as Angie, the goody two-shoes offspring of the equally sanctimonious Bishop King (former Baywatch regular Gregory Alan Williams).

Originally, I was going to go to bed. Then, I started working on a new mash-up. Next thing I knew, all that I had planned to do had gone out the window and I was experimenting with something else. The end result: a union between Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole” and Boston’s “More Than A Feeling” that is just as pointless as the source materials, but just as groovy nonetheless.

Product Review: Zero-G – Chilled Grooves [Sample Pack]

Review posted at Altsounds.com

Once again it’s time to venture into the vast realm of sounds designed to drive DJ’s crazy. Not “crazy” as is “Argh! I’m sick of these lame-ass sounds — it’s driving me CRAZY!,” but rather “crazy” in the more positive “I can’t decide which great sound to use — it’s driving me crazy” light. In any case, Chilled Grooves by Zero-G sports a number of very trippy samples that are sure to create the perfect ambiance on any dance floor. Like most audio sample collections out there, Chilled Grooves gives us a host of styles, and, for your added convenience, the Royalty-Free software also contains a few Kits, so you can build your own dance floor masterpiece without worrying about the Copyright Police knocking your door down…(Read the rest at Altsounds.com)
