PlayStation 3 Review: Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory on Blogcritics.

Last year, I was unceremoniously greeted with the unhappy news that an old acquaintance of mine by the name of Chris had passed away in his apartment — where he slowly decomposed for about a week before someone noticed they hadn’t seen him. Due to his highly autistic behavior and noticeable lack of social skills (to say nothing of his personal hygiene), he wasn’t considered to be a very popular fellow amongst his peers. He and I, however, were able to communicate when I was younger because of our shared interests such as the British sci-fi comedy program, Red Dwarf, and the occasional anime title. (more…)

PlayStation 3 Review: Tales of Graces f

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Tales of Graces f on Blogcritics.

OK, so before you start groaning: yes, this is another Japanese role-playing game (or “J-RPG,” as they are known to fans). And, as such, you can expect a gratuitous amount of big-eyed androgynous caricatures, goofy-looking critters to combat, and — most importantly of all — fun. For those of you who are utterly confused by the weird-ass title here, Tales of Graces f is one of those literal translation jobs, and the “f” in this case stands for “future.” The game, one of many in the long-running Tales series that started in 1995, transports us to planet called Ephinea — where a seemingly-genderless knight by the handle of Asbel encounters an amnesiac lass. PlayStation 3 Review: Mass Effect 3

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Mass Effect 3 on Blogcritics.

It has been said that we should all take a cue from the seasons, winds, sun, and rain — and not fear the Reaper. Well, that may be true when it comes to a single Reaper, but when you’re dealing with an entire species of Reapers (plural), and said race is hell-bent on destroying all organic life in the universe via a variety of ugly-ass creatures that can kill you in the blink of an eye, then I think a little trepidation is more than justifiable. And that’s just what happens in Mass Effect 3, the latest, eagerly-awaited installment of the popular video game franchise which follows in the footsteps of the game’s previous entries. (more…)

PlayStation 3 Review: Rage

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Rage on Blogcritics.

In 1993, id Software launched a game entitled Doom. It was a revolutionary title, one which not only paved the way for all of the third-dimensional first-person shooters that have flooded the PC and console gaming market ever since, but which also opened up the world to the incredible realm of something known as networked multiplayer gaming via a recently-inaugurated thingy we all used to refer to as the Information Superhighway (thank you, Al Gore) — an online phenomenon that has prevented many a lad (and lass) from developing an actual life ever since.

PlayStation 3 Review: Yakuza 4

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Yakuza 4 on Blogcritics.

Following the devastating 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami, conservative American shock jock Rush Limbaugh did what he’s best known for: he made a totally inappropriate and insensitive remark that offended anyone possessing even so much as a single functioning brain cell. The snide comment involved the ridiculing of earthquake survivors for continuing to recycle their rubbish even after such a cataclysmic event had taken place.

PlayStation 3 Review: Alpha Protocol

Its subtitle reads “The Espionage RPG.” The very thought of such a concept sends chills of coolness up the spine of any red-blooded individual who grew up watching James Bond movies and playing entries from such classics as the Final Fantasy video game series.

PlayStation 3 Review: Last Rebellion

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Last Rebellion on Blogcritics.

Putting your hard-earned money down on an RPG is often very akin to ice-skating. Imagine you’ve gone far out of your way to locating the most “top-of-the-line” skates available, and proceeded to slide out to the thinnest patch of ice on a lake, far away from the other skaters back by the shore. Sometimes, the results are pleasant – you discover that the ice is thicker than the entire Agatha Christie bibliography in hardback: it’s very stable indeed, and the whole remote location becomes your private ice-skating paradise. Other times, you wind up treading onto a patch of frost that’s thinner than the plot of a direct-to-video softcore porn – and you’re sucked under into the sub-zero waters below, with no chance of being saved by the people back by the shore.

PS3 Review: Star Ocean: The Last Hope – International

Originally posted at blogcritics.org

Having grown up in the era of the Atari 5200, ColecoVision, and Nintendo 8-bit systems, the only RPG that ever crossed my path was the original Zelda game. Since then, there have been many games that have caused boys and men alike to sit in front of their television sets for weeks on end and challenge every aspect of their personal and business lives. Sweethearts get ignored, caffeinated beverages and junk foods are consumed en masse, and nerd points are accumulated as one video game geek after another calls in sick to their workplace in order to beat the game.
