DVD Review: Eureka, Season 5 – The Final Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Eureka, Season 5 – The Final Season on Blogcritics.

Many individuals out there believe the Road to Hell is paved with the good intentions of others. It that were true, one might have every right to argue about the belief that the equally-talked about Stairway to Heaven could very well be lined with bad television network decisions. All those really good and/or promising series that received a unwarranted, swift chop of the ever-dreaded “Exec Axe” are there, embedded within the steps leading up to eternal glory to entice you with the promise that they just might be alive and well up there. Ironically enough, sources indicate that Highway to Heaven is not among those titles, but I’ve been assured by the Amazing Criswell that Eureka is. (more…)

DVD Review: Warehouse 13 – Season Three

Article first published as DVD Review: Warehouse 13 – Season Three on Blogcritics.

Many a science fiction television series has the tendency to take itself as seriously as a heart-attack, only occasionally dabbing into the subgenre of “the funny.” As such, they tend to become what one might desire to call “soap operatic” — reaching at every ring the merry-go-round dispenses in their direction, all the while becoming more staid in nature than before. And then there are those shows that, from the get-go, take a light-hearted approach to things. One such series is SyFy’s Warehouse 13 — a not-too-terribly solemn series that was surely inspired by that epic closing shot from Raiders of the Lost Ark. (more…)

DVD Review: Alphas – Season One

Article first published as DVD Review: Alphas – Season One on Blogcritics.

Much like there are confused teenage girls and bored, desperate housewives who periodically get into a heated argument over whether or not Robert Pattinson is a better actor over Taylor Lautner, there are those of us in this world who hold high opinions of certain (real) performers — and feel that they can liven up even the most dreadful of affairs with their presence alone. Who can forget how a latter-day Orson Welles was able to make Paul Masson wine almost sound tolerable? And then there are contemporary artists, such as one of my personal favorites, the great David Strathairn. Much like most straight men willingly admit they would have sex with George Clooney, I would gladly do the same with David. But I digress. (more…)

Blu-ray Review: Universal Soldier – Day of Reckoning

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Bored to Death – The Complete Third Season on Blogcritics.

As anyone who has ever paid even so much as a dollar to sit down and watch an action movie knows, it’s always nice to have said moving picture grab you by one portion of your anatomy or another and not let go until it’s all done and over with. Sometimes, filmmakers take that extra cautious step of waiting a tad bit longer to start the adrenaline injection — giving you just enough time to get your drinks and snacks well situated for the ride ahead. Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning goes several steps further than that — bestowing upon us a film so bold and innovative, that it never actually succeeds in being even so much as remotely interesting. Blu-ray Review: Masters of the Universe – 25th Anniversary Edition

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Masters of the Universe – 25th Anniversary Edition on Blogcritics.

OK, confession time, kids: during the first half of the ’80s, I was one of those kids who was hopelessly addicted to all things He-Man. I had all of the action figures and playsets, watched the cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe religiously, and even extended my collectible madness so far as to collect many of the She-Ra toys. And then, puberty hit — as did reality. At one point, I wrote Mattel with a toy suggestion, which they replied by sending me an official “Sorry, no can do” letter. Later, in 1987, I saw that exact same idea on the shelves. (more…)

DVD Review: Misfits – Season One

Article first published as DVD Review: Misfits – Season One on Blogcritics.

Sometimes, you come across a show that makes you ask yourself “Hey, why the heck didn’t I see or hear about this one sooner?” In this instance, the title is the British sci-fi/comedy/drama series Misfits, and the very fact that most British shows take the slow boat to America might explain my complete obliviousness to the entire existence of it — not to mention I don’t have cable or subscribe to any of those video-on-demand websites. But I digress: the discovery of Misfits has proved a very worthwhile one indeed — an opinion that I am most definitely not alone in sharing. (more…)

Blu-ray Review: Battleship (2012) – You Sunk My Will to Live!

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Battleship (2012) – You Sunk My Will to Live! on Blogcritics.

The adaptation a much-loved, classic television show into a feature-length theatrical flick has proven pretty much to be a cinch in the past. Why, we’ve seen Addams families, Transformers, and so much more galore come and go for the better part of the last twenty-some-odd years now. Of course, once Hollywood’s finest begin to run out of bad ideas, they have to fall upon something else to draw their inspiration from. Now, it seems, that motivation is being summoned by classic Milton Bradley games that pre-date World War I. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. (more…)

Recently, the folks at Universal Studios Home Entertainment unveiled three very different-but-wholly-similar SyFy shows to DVD: a venerable assortment of television series that should appeal to almost everything a science fiction lover could want. From the newly-established Alphas, to the well-known humor and heart of Warehouse 13, and to the final hoorah of the show-stopping Eureka, this trio of TV goodies are worth their respective weights in gold. Blu-ray Review: Wizards (1977)

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Wizards (1977) on Blogcritics.

Several years after wowing the world with his hugely successful, risqué animated classic for adults, an adaptation of R. Crumb’s Fritz the Cat, Ralph Bakshi brought us something a little more on the serious side — the deadly serious side. Though the title alone invokes nightmarish visions of old guys with beards in large, star-studded dunce caps, Wizards is actually an outlandish adventure set in a post-apocalyptic Earth — in a world full of humans, mutants, fairies, dwarves, goblins, elves, and who knows what else. Following the devastation of the planet, deadly radioactive clouds blurred the skies above — veils of death and decay that have taken two million years to clear for the current inhabitants of the planet to see the light of day. DVD Review: Eureka – Season 4.5

Article first published as DVD Review: Eureka – Season 4.5 on Blogcritics.

There are a lot of advantages when you don’t have Cable TV — especially when you’re as cynical, jaded, and cheap as I am. For one thing, you don’t have to suffer through crappy Reality shows, biased news broadcasts, and infomercials. You also save a few bucks every month. However, I have discovered that there are disadvantages to not having Cable TV — an inconvenience that is almost unforgivable by some people’s standards — being that you can’t keep up with a fun show like SyFy’s Eureka. Fortunately, though, you can keep up with it on DVD, just like I’ve done with Universal’s release of Eureka: Season 4.5. (more…)
