Blu-ray Review: 4.3.2.1

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: 4.3.2.1 on Blogcritics.

Imagine a heist movie without a heist. A multifaceted story without the multiple facets. Or, if you really want to sell it: a hip British action/drama that looks like it could have been made by a couple of your average paint-by-number trendy American filmmakers. Either three would describe 4.3.2.1 — a title that absolutely begs your forgiveness, and which also takes you gently by the hand in order to count backwards to the number wherein you should raise your expectations to in the event you have opted to view this particular motion picture. Blu-ray Review: Hung – The Complete Third Season

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Hung – The Complete Third Season on Blogcritics.

He’s just a gigolo — and everywhere he goes, people know the part he’s playing. Oh, the joys of male prostitution. Not that I’d know anything about that, of course, but I’d be lying if I said I — like many other men out there — have never thought about what it would be like to be a part of the world’s oldest profession. But my own fantasies about what I like to envision would be my dream job is not under scrutiny here. No, instead we’re talking about the HBO series Hung: The Complete Third Season — a series that, sadly, came to an end in 2011 with this final ten-episode hoorah. (more…)

Blu-ray Reviews: Boardwalk Empire / How to Make it in America / Hung / Bored to Death

Article first published as Blu-ray Reviews: Boardwalk Empire / How to Make it in America / Hung / Bored to Death on Blogcritics.

A long time ago, HBO mostly aired movies that — if you were lucky — were only about a year-old. As time went on, the cable network began to produce its own, independent programming of feature-length films. Once TV shows became popular again in the late ’90s, HBO produced its own series as well. Now, here we are today with HBO airing one television program after another — some only lasting a few short seasons. Recently, HBO brought us four different shows of varying genres to Blu-ray for all to enjoy: Boardwalk Empire, and the already canceled How to Make it in America, Hung, and Bored to Death. (more…)

Blu-ray Review: Road Trip (2000)

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Road Trip (2000) on Blogcritics.

As the end of the 20th Century came to pass, a majority of spoiled Generation Y-ers were anxious to rebel against just about everything under the sun simply because the faux punk music and Hot Topic clothing that was mass-marketed towards them had repeatedly told them to. With this seemingly worthless insurrection at bay, filmmakers began to embrace any kind of movie genre they could in order to get the pandered youth packed into theaters. Thus, the manufacturing of raunchy, offensive comedies began to emerge — a subgenre that had been popular with high-school and college-aged boys and girls of the previous generation in the ’80s. Blu-ray Review: The Borgias – The First Season

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: The Borgias – The First Season on Blogcritics.

Of all the infamous families ever to proudly stroll across the mountains and plains of Europe during the Renaissance, perhaps none are as notorious as the Borgias. Driven by almost every kind of lust imaginable, the family has become synonymous with corruption and crime — an aspect that makes for a smashing Showtime series, don’t you think? Well, Neil Jordon, the director of The Crying Game and Interview with the Vampire certainly thought so, as he is the force behind the creation of this series starring Jeremy Irons, François Arnaud, Holliday Grainger, and Colm Feore. Catching Up at the Video Store: Skin. Sin. Win.

Article first published as Skin. Sin. Win. on Blogcritics.

Waters may rise and nations fall, but if there’s one constant thing in this universe, it’s sex. Even during Hollywood’s most conservative days, the subject of fornication and the allure of the human physique was still present — whether one was staring leeringly at the sight of Jane Russell’s bosom, or was dropping a few coins into a nickelodeon in order to see more than just a heaving cleavage. As the years went by, however, the censors lightened their death grip on all of the things they deemed icky: four letter words, violence, and lustful communions between unmarried sinners from all walks of life.

Article first published as High-Def Hijinks! on Blogcritics.

Sometimes, you don’t have anything unreservedly special in mind when it comes to sitting back and watching a little leisurely television viewing: you simply want to be entertained. As it stands, there are about a bazillion Standard-Definition out there — whereas the illustrious world of High-Def offers decidedly less options to choose from. At this particular instant in time, Blu-rays are usually not grouped categorically or by genres as their regular DVD counterparts are. And so, here are six completely random titles now available on Blu-ray from video stores near and far.

Enjoy.

Catching Up At The Video Store: Sex, er SIX Features Jesus Wouldn’t Approve Of

Article first published as Sex, er Six Features Jesus Wouldn’t Approve Of on Blogcritics.

Since the dawn of the motion picture industry, there have been a number of surefire methods that filmmakers and distributors have used in order to draw certain types of people in. One guaranteed technique is religion. Whether a film depicts the final days of Jesus of Nazareth in a entirely brutal-but-all-too-realistic matter (see that one Mel Gibson piece), or it offers an alternative and entirely-sacrilegious view of Jesus’ last few hours on Earth (a specific Martin Scorsese title comes to mind), you can bet your bottom dollar that the religious community is going to take note — and thus, pay. Controversy usually follows, which, in-turn, makes more people (even those who are not religious) pay as well.

Blu-ray Review: The Rocky Horror Picture Show – 35th Anniversary Edition

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: The Rocky Horror Picture Show – 35th Anniversary Edition on Blogcritics.

For some, it’s the quintessential Hallowe’en classic. For many more, it is the first and foremost midnight movie. And then there’s that percentage of people who find it to be the most overrated musical in existence (personally, I prefer Phantom Of The Paradise, but we’ll save that argument for another time). But, either way you slice it, you cannot deny The Rocky Horror Picture Show has earned itself a considerably noticeable place in cult movie history.

Blu-Ray Review: Wild Things: Foursome (Unrated Edition)

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Wild Things: Foursome (Unrated Edition) on Blogcritics.

As soon as our overly-macho pink-skinned white hero declares “It’s gonna be over before the sun hits the first layer of SPF,” you know you’ve just signed up for a dinner with one big-ass turkey. And, sure enough, Wild Things: Foursome is indeed a big-ass turkey. While most provocative, late-night-cable-type T&A movies are designed to leave the average straight male moaning on the couch with his pants undone, the turkey effect of Wild Things: Foursome leaves one moaning on the couch with their pants undone in an agonizing, “Oh, my God, I consumed entirely too much turkey” post-Holiday dinner kind of way. In fact, were it actually a real turkey, Wild Things: Foursome could successfully supply your entire family with Thanksgiving dinners for years to come.
