It’s that time of year once again, kids: that instance wherein we shuffle throughout crowded store aisles like maniacs and send cheesy messages of holiday cheer to family members and old acquaintances whom we would normally give absolutely no inkling of thought to. Yes, it’s the holiday season, and — as always — the notion of “What the Hell do I buy for that movie/TV-obsessed loser in my life this year?” emerges. DVD Review: Criminal Minds – The Seventh Season

Article first published as DVD Review: Criminal Minds – The Seventh Season on Blogcritics.

Those of you who regularly read my ranting and raving against what seems like an endless sea of diarrheic television programming might be interested to know that I actually do tend to enjoy a series every once in a while. Optimism: check. The problem with that, of course, is that it really doesn’t take much for a network or a producer to act just the teensiest bit negligent in order to let even a fairly (enjoyably) mediocre television show jump the shark. Foreshadowing: check. Sometimes the bound into the salty sea air over a hungry man-eater might take the form of a complete change of casting. In others, the return of an old cast-member might be satisfactory to warrant one’s inattention. (more…)

DVD Review: Whitney – Season One

Article first published as DVD Review: Whitney – Season One on Blogcritics.

Since the days of the theatre as brought to us by people and playwrights of the ancient lands of Greece, India, Rome, and Britain, the situational comedy has been a formidable facet of storytelling. Indeed, were it not for the political, sexual, and social satires set forth from those classic stages of yore, we might not know the likes of Monty Python or SCTV today — two items I most definitely could not live without in this mad, mad world. However, by flipping the coin over to the other side, there would be a number of other shows that might not have been allowed to exist, either, had our world’s long-gone authors not given it their all so long ago. DVD Review: Absolutely Fabulous – 20th Anniversary Specials

Article first published as DVD Review: Absolutely Fabulous – 20th Anniversary Specials on Blogcritics.

While it would always pain me to think about how much younger I was when my pseudo-family and I would sit back and watch Absolutely Fabulous during those glorious as-first-run-as-first-run-could-be-for-American-cable-TV-back-then days, it really didn’t click with me how truly long it had been until I observed this collection of new BBC specials starring the timeless twosome of Eddy and Patsy (Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, respectively) read Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials. Wait, what? Twenty years? Oh, my! And yet, as I sat there imbibing along with the gals onscreen and bearing witness to the fact that they’re still just as brain-dead as they were two decades ago, I couldn’t help but feel just as young as they surely think they still are. DVD Review: 30 Rock – Season 6

Article first published as DVD Review: 30 Rock – Season 6 on Blogcritics.

Oscar Wilde once noted that “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life.” Of course, he didn’t live in the same world we currently reside in, now did he? You see, in this world, even the most scandalous real life incident made by the lowest form of supposed funnymen can be turned into something amusing for the sake of a laugh on TV. Take, for a very modest example, that point in time a short while back when comedian Tracy Morgan made some anti-gay remarks — which resulted in the LGBT community calling for his resignation. Sure, he apologized, but 30 Rock creator/star/producer/writer Tina Fey didn’t waste an opportunity to make a joke out of it. (more…)

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Ninth Season: How to Carry On After Your Star Gets Fired

The loss of a lead performer in a film or television franchise can be a truly devastating ordeal — whether the missing star’s absence is attributable to an unfortunate real-life passing (see: Taggart), or someone simply went wacko and got shit-canned by producers (see: Valerie). In the moving picture industry, this can be rectified by a simple bit of recasting. In TV Land, however, there are these strange, ardent, geek-like individuals — people we often refer to as “fans” — who become so rapt by their favorite show that the mere thought of hiring a new player is usually met with disaster.

Revenge: The Complete First Season DVD Review: Very Little Here You Can’t Find in a Daytime Soap Opera

Since the dawn of television itself, there have been countless attempts to turn popular big screen movies into a long-running weekly programs produced exclusively for small screen viewers. More times than not, these transitions have proved disastrous for producers and performers alike, but that hasn’t prevented them from continuing to try. Lately, however, TV studios have been attempting to turn entire film genres into series. A recent example was the shockingly god-awful unintentional laughfest The River — a show that should serve as living proof that ABC will, in fact, air anything.

DVD Review: The Glades – The Complete Second Season

Article first published as DVD Review: The Glades – The Complete Second Season on Blogcritics.

“Turn it off. This is a very bad TV show. Please turn it off.” Those were the very words my 12-year-old son sent me via an amusing passive-aggressive text message while we were watching The Glades: The Complete Second Season — a show I had the opportunity to check out last year when the first season hit DVD. Back then, I found it to be a strangely-enjoyable series: one that was, for all accounts and purposes to anyone with even rudimentary motor skills, bad. The weird thing is, that — despite being was an uncompromisingly-awful television show — it was still fun to watch. (more…)

Leverage: The 4th Season DVD Review: Like a Needle Stuck in a Groove

When Leverage first aired on TNT several years back, the modern-day spin on the classic espionage series Mission: Impossible seemed like a novel one. Sadly, by the time the second season rolled around, the show’s writers had already found themselves becoming formulaic and repetitive — a routine that kept on going until, finally, the whole series felt like a needle stuck in a groove. So, when you roll around to the fourth season, where do you take your characters when you don’t have all that much going on in terms of writing and delivery (not to mention plot) in the first place?

Article first published as Blu-ray Review: Workaholics – Seasons 1 & 2 on Blogcritics.

There’s at least one in every office: that lazy, obnoxious individual who somehow manages to stay on the company payroll no matter how crass and moronic he/she truly is. Sadly, these people often find themselves getting promoted, declaring workplace holidays, and making the place of employment safe for the strangest of things. In the case of the Comedy Central series Workaholics, we get to see the daily misadventures of three insufferable donkey droppings who manage to stay afloat in the punchbowl of life.
