There are some truly bad people out there — and, as is customary for these kind of games, the world is stuck in a fighting funk: a global act of conflict that once again plunges videogame players into the hazardous terrain of war. But then, just stop and imagine what a game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would consist of were developers to omit the whole “combat” thing. And so, we dive into this monumental Activision title, co-written by award-winning film and television writer Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Casino Royale), with the full anticipation of developing blisters on our thumbs.

In 1992, Namco released a flight-simulator arcade game called Air Combat, a bulky action fighter title that not only took up about half of a city block but was nonetheless popular enough to draw in kids with quarters — all of whom were anxious to sit in the groovy cockpit-style seat it had if nothing else. As the video game console industry began to evolve in the mid ‘90s, our technologically-advanced brethren in Japan began creating a handful of sequels and spin-offs (naming their franchise Ace Combat), producing more than a dozen titles over the next couple of decades for aero-nuts all over the world to enjoy.

PlayStation 3 Review: F1 2011

Racing games are a bit of a hit and miss affair in my opinion. Rarely does a title wherein one is required to speed across a selected tract of land in a souped-up competition sports car, (hopefully) overwhelming the rivalry in the process, only to be awarded an animated gold-plated cup instill any non-racing adherents with the urge to so much as qualify for said contest. For me, a racing game has to offer something a little different in order to entice me to warrant wasting the ample amount of time I have on my hands towards the fulfillment of the potential diversion it promises. I want to be awarded with oodles of action, thrills, music, and possibly even a few boobies.

In 1993, id Software launched a game entitled Doom. It was a revolutionary title, one which not only paved the way for all of the third-dimensional first-person shooters that have flooded the PC and console gaming market ever since, but which also opened up the world to the incredible realm of something known as networked multiplayer gaming via a recently-inaugurated thingy we all used to refer to as the Information Superhighway (thank you, Al Gore) — an online phenomenon that has prevented many a lad (and lass) from developing an actual life ever since.

While its title may be very lyrical sounding when enunciated properly in a smooth, calm tone, a simple glance at the words “El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron” may have you tilting your head to one side and weeping slightly. Exactly what is it? Well, in a nutshell, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is a video game that was inspired by Jewish religious beliefs, manufactured by the Japanese, and subsequently translated into English. And if that doesn’t cause you to tilt your head to one side and weep, then I don’t know what will.

At some point in time, you’ve probably wanted to become some sort of hero for the world. A quick glance at the news or papers will relay the horrors going on all over the globe: genocide, war, rallies by the Tea Party movement — it’s hard to sit by and idly watch these horrific things happen without wanting to leap up in the air and swoop down like Superman and bitch slap the shit out of everyone that’s being stupid. Now imagine if you could take that undersized desire and actually do something about it — like pick up a gun, drop into a war zone and restore a little balance and order?

While my taste in music has practically always been set to the all ‘80s station, I happen only recently acquired an appreciation for that funky music which ruled the radio waves only a few short years prior. You know the kind. If not, just pick up any good flick from the ‘70s wherein you are treated to the sight of now-vintage muscle cars tearing their way through the crowded streets of the big city and you’ll hear it for yourself. Or, if you’re familiar with the music I’m talking about and have a hankerin’ for muscle cars roaring down metropolitan highways, alleys and avenues, then I heartily suggest you pick up Driver: San Francisco.

Not only has she (inadvertently) aided many a lonely, nerdy boy through his passage through puberty via her shapely pixelated curves, but she’s also enabled millions of lonely, nerdy boys and girls alike to dive right in to various heights (and depths) of adventure by means of nine video games to date.

The roaring of the crowds. The burnt rubber and fume smells exhaling from the cars. The obnoxious white trash woman wearing a Dixie Flag tank top and cut-offs sitting in front of you smoking cheap cigarettes and downing her umpteenth beer in that hour (and who would probably stand out even at Walmart). Yes, thanks to the incredible world of video games, you too can now enjoy the sights and sounds of NASCAR racing — without the moral and psychological detriments one might obtain from the latter. Actually, truth be told here, kids, you don’t have to experience any of the aforementioned sensations (good or bad), because you’re in the driver’s seat — safely hidden away from the strange people in the stands.

After the sprawling heights that Rockstar’s unexpected success Red Dead Redemption soared to in 2010, one would think that it would be next-to-impossible for them to bring us something as eagerly-epic the following year in 2011. Indeed, many video game developers — much like authors and filmmakers — seem to unintentionally employ an alternating hit and miss strategy. But this is Rockstar we’re talking about: even when their games aren’t all that great (e.g. Bully), they still tend to be enjoyable.
